As a kid, I always had to beg for a new toy or game, as at the time the original NES dropped, I was barely old enough to get a tiny allowance. The Vans Sk8-Hi Nintendo Controller definitely pulls up some memories for me as the gateway to many years of video game playing.
These released as part of a pack featuring different NES prints. The soles of each pair read “GAME OVER” and the print for each shoe shows up on the tongue tag. The shoebox even looks like an NES right down to the RCA cables!
Red, grey, black and white are all going to play off each other in your outfit. I recommend going with a black top and either dark denim or army green pants. The green can definitely help spice up the outfit and break things up a bit.
I haven’t found too many Vans with truly stellar materials, and these being a general release definitely don’t have the nicest suede. However, the shoes are ruggedly built like I suppose true skate shoes should be, from the suede to the printed canvas and leather stripe on the side. Come to think of it, the NES was kind of a rugged brick of a system. These are more about the look and nostalgia than premium materials. The inner leather liner is a nice touch, though!
How do they fit?
The Vans Sk8-Hi Nintendo Controller fit true to size and are somewhat comfortable. Sk8 His for me have never been the most comfy shoes ever, but these get the job done. Not that these will hurt your feet, but for casual wear there are cushier shoes out there. Again, these are all about the NES theme and rocking some controllers on my feet than they are about being as comfy as a pair of Adidas Boost.
While I don’t play as many games these days, the nostalgia is strong with NES related material. Also, Vans really put a lot of thought into the set! Vans really gets a gold invincibility star for this pack. Don’t be deterred by the fact that these are Sk8-His, if you want some NES shoes, this is the pack to look into!
