Nike Dunk High UNLV Be True Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

I always felt that the grey on the 1999 UNLV LE dunks was too light. Enter the Nike Dunk High UNLV Be True retro from 2016.

Nike redid a bunch of the BTTYS dunks in 2016 and while I initially passed on them, when I found myself recently without any dunks in the famous Ultraman colorway, I had to go back and grab the latest retro I could find. These come with spare laces in the same color as the stock laces and a special pull-out drawer type of box. One odd thing about these is the insoles are white with no Nike or any other branding whatsoever.

I always felt like these looked best with a medium or light wash denim and a grey top. They can also work with black denim and top – and probably other combos as well. The only thing I would be careful of is wearing grey pants with these as it could be way too matchy with the grey on the shoe.

I’ve always been a fan of this colorway, but the SB’s and 1999 versions I had either didn’t age well or seemed to not have the right shades of color on them. This pair I think nails the colors a bit more and seems like they will last a bit longer than previous versions in terms of not fading as light. I can now, based on owning these, recommend the 2016 BTTYS retros!

How Are The Materials?

I initially passed on these as a lot of dunk leather from 2016 is subpar. However, now that I have these in hand, the leather is actually pretty good! It’s surprisingly soft and even has a bit of tumble to it. The finish is still a tad on the shiny side but overall it’s nice! The shoe sports a nylon tongue like the 1999s, but it seems a little stiffer and taller here. I’d rate the quality on these as pleasanly surprising!

How Do They Fit?

These Nike Dunk High UNLV Be True should fit true to size. They have a bit less padding than a Nike SB so they are less stiff out of the box and a bit more instantly comfortable. They have no Zoom Air though, so the cushioning is a little bit more of a “standard” feel rather than that slightest bit of bounce that Zoom provides. I went a half size up to take advantage of a great deal, so I have to lace these a bit less loose than I like. I’d recommend against sizing up with these unless you’re catching a good price like I did.
