The Nike Dunk Low Silver Surfer are a throwback re-release similar to the Currys and Red/Obsidian. In fact, the original pair of Silver Surfers released in 2004, so this retro is exactly 2 decades later.
I had the ’04 pair, and in terms of colorway and materials, Nike got this remake right. I had sold that pair, so getting this one feels super refreshing and nostalgic for me.
Just looking at the sneaker, one doesn’t immediately think of the well-known Marvel Comics character that they’re named after. This is despite Nike subtly referencing the Silver Surfer on the SNKRS release page for this pair (without saying it outright).
However, there is one glaring difference between this release and the previous version.
On the 2004 version, the insole featured a print of the character screaming, showing an outline of the Silver Surfer with a look of complete horror on his face! Unfortunately, this version skips that special graphic, opting for a simple Nike logo on the insole instead.
As a result, the connection to Marvel Comics isn’t as strong with this pair. Given the historical context of the colorway, these can still be called Silver Surfers, but only based on what the original release had going on.
They come laced with white laces in a standard Nike Sportswear box, with a spare set of blue laces included.
The shoes are priced at $135, indicating they are treating this pair as a “limited” release, with the box label calling these a QS. This is despite the sneaker being relatively easy to obtain on release.
Materials
We get some basic, smooth leather covering the overlays on the upper. Nothing too fancy here, although the original release was fairly basic in this regard as well. At least the leather isn’t as plasticky as some other Nike releases, like the aforementioned Red/Obsidian colorway. It’s actually quite thick, and on the sturdy side as far as Dunk leather goes.
The mesh used on the underlays is slightly different than usual and has a silvery look to it. This is the closest we’ll come to this version of the sneaker being “Silver Surfer” related.
Fit & Comfort
I find these to fit a bit roomier, much like other non-SB Dunks. I stuck with my usual true-to-size fit.
There’s no advanced cushioning tech here, which is expected for a retro pair of Dunks. Instead, you get the standard, solid support typical of casual retro sneakers. They’re still comfortable enough for everyday wear, with a fit and feel similar to other Dunk lows in this price range.
If these are sold out in stores, you can try looking for them on eBay.
