1999 was a good year for iconic co.jp colorways such as the Nike Dunk Low Reverse Curry. Luckily for collectors, Nike occasionally throws fans of Japan-exclusive colorways a bone with retros and rereleases of colorways like this one!
I always wanted a pair of these, and fortunately the hype for non-SB Dunks is not where it was just a couple of years ago. Owning these is now a reality due to people sleeping on this release!
As the nickname would suggest, this colorway is a reverse of another 1999 Japan-exclusive “Curry” release with brown overlays and white underlays. From what I can tell, Nike got the color fairly close to the original, which is really all that fans of this type of release want.
Outside of the colorway, the quality seems slightly better on these. The sneaker comes laced with brown laces (shown below) but I swapped them out to the included spare white laces. The shoes come in a plain orange Nike box.
Materials
What puts these slightly above other recent Dunks I’ve picked up is that these are constructed of a slightly nicer feeling leather. Texturally, I prefer it to the shiny smooth leather that typically comes on a more basic Dunk release. I’m not a leather expert, but to me the materials here are just slightly softer, and a bit less “coated” looking than less expensive Dunk releases. Nothing mind-blowing or top-tier, but I think it’s nicer overall. The retail on this pair does come in at around $20 more than basic general release pairs.
Fit & Comfort
Like many non-SB Dunk releases, these have a fairly roomy fit. The materials are not as stiff as the basic leather on other Dunks, so the step-in comfort is a bit better and these break in quickly. I opt for true to size when it comes to sneakers like these. However, if you often find Nikes to be too narrow, consider going up by half a size. The sizing aligns with the standard Dunk fit, so if you’re acquainted with this type of sneaker already, you already know basically how they’ll feel on feet.
Non-SB Dunks feature a simple insole, midsole, and outsole. They lack any specific tech, like Nike Air or Zoom Air. As a result, the underfoot comfort is decent for casual wear. If you’re accustomed to the comfort of running and walking shoes with Boost or React in them, this retro casual model might not stand out in terms of comfort. Still, they look good on feet and are comfortable enough for basic wear.
