I’ve just reviewed the Free99 dunk set, and I’m back with another 2 pack of dunks. This time, we’re looking at the Nike Dunk Low Crazy Camo & Multi Camo.
Articles online have said that these reference Nike’s “King of the Court” tournament from the early 2000s. They certainly at least reference basketball since the right heel has a Nike Basketball logo embroidered in. The main theme though is obviously multiple camo patterns on both the black and white pair.
I really like how two mismatched pairs can have the same idea behind them but come out totally different. Not only are the patterns mixed up from left to right, but they are inverted as far as blocking from the black pair to the white pair. The black pair has keeps the camo on the panels and the black areas on the overlays. Meanwhile the white pair keeps the panels white but adds camo to the overlays instead!
My Thoughts on The Camo Pack
Both pairs constitute the flashier side of non-sb dunks in my collection, so if I’m feeling low key, these would not be the joints I would choose to wear. However if I felt like wearing something a little louder, having both these options in my dunk arsenal expands my capability to do that. The black pair for me is maybe the more low key of the 2 colorways as the black overlays keep things slightly more muted. Meanwhile the bright white panels on the multi camo pair are a little bit more attention getting.
As far as the theme, I don’t really remember the King of Court tournament, but I do remember that camo was really big in the early 2000s. People were wearing it regularly as part of their outfits and it was even seen on red carpet type events.
Personally, I’m really liking both pairs. Interestingly, the resale is super low on these, especially following their release overseas. Certain dunks seem to be getting more and more affordable even in the aftermarket which I think is good as far as being able to finally get dunks without feeling too ripped off.
I think the black camo pair is maybe a little easier to wear, but overall both look good as far as I’m concerned. When I’m wearing shoes like these, I don’t really focus on matching so much as just not clashing with the rest of my fit. I’d definitely avoid wearing another big camo piece when you rock these, I think the multiple camos on each pair are enough!
Details/Materials
Both pairs have basically the same materials and details but just with contrasting colors. Starting off we have a Nike logo with swoosh embossed onto a square green leather tongue tag, all sitting on a nylon tongue. These are an SE dunk. That’s SE as in special edition, *NOT* SB as in skateboarding. The SE tongues of late seem to be a bit puffier than a standard regular dunk tongue, but not to the degree of an SB dunk.
As we move down we have leather eyelets, a ballistic mesh toebox and leather mudguard. The right toebox on the black pair is more of a regular mesh or maybe a soft canvas mesh. Whatever material, it’s notable that this type of camo uses a different mesh.
As we move to the side, more leather overlays and ballistic mesh camo panels, with a green smooth leather swoosh on top. On the back we have Nike stitched in green on a leather backtab with more ballistic mesh and leather below. This is on the left shoe, on the right shoe’s backtab we get the Nike basketball logo embroidered in bright orange.
On the insole is green with an orange Nike logo. The outsole is green with the Nike logo in the middle per usual.
Both pairs include a pair of flat laces with green aglets. Black for the black pair and white for the white pair. Both pairs ship in a regular Nike Sportswear box. No extras with these, however the box price is slightly lower than the Free99 which had insole graphics. At $110 I wouldn’t expect anything else from Nike on these as the biggest feature is the mismatched panels.
How Is The Quality on the Nike Dunk Low Crazy Camo & Multi Camo?
The upper is basically leather and ballistic mesh, except for the canvas like mesh on the right toebox on the black pair. The different meshes pretty much are what they are, they seem nice and sturdy. Still, they also seem nice and pliable which is a good thing as ballistic mesh can be stiff. We definitely want the pliable uppers for more comfort on a shoe like this.
As far as the leather, it looks nice from far away and up close seems to be decent quality. Nike did add a tumbled finish to these which is pretty obvious. When I see Nike’s overtumble, it isn’t a turn off. However I always feel like Nike is trying to cover up something when they do that.
Regardless, I didn’t get this shoe for the materials and I wasn’t expecting a lot. While it would have been nice to get something a little more premium, this shoe is strictly for dunk fans who like the colorway. Matter of fact, when it comes to any dunk in this price range, I think its always going to come down to how much I like the colorway or theme.
For me, these have decent materials. They’re definitely better than the UNLV and hyper cobalt dunks I’ve reviewed on this channel before. Still, don’t expect to be blown away here, we’re not getting anything super premium, but that’s not the point of these anyway.
As far as QC and craftsmanship, these seem ok, nothing out of the ordinary for some Nike dunks. I’m sure if I spend more time nitpicking these I can find something but overall they seem good on QC.
Fit and Comfort
Ordinarily I get a size 9.5 in most shoes. I normally get that for most non-sb dunks as well. For these types of dunks, the fit is generally a tad roomy at true to size. To stay on the safe side, I recommend that whatever you get in Nikes normally, stick with that same true to size.
The Nike Dunk Low Crazy Camo & Multi Camo are a bit stiff and relatively unpadded, and as such the fit does wind up being slightly roomy at true to size. The leather took me a few minutes to break in. It feels stiff out the box but after walking around in them for a short while, they got comfier. The comfort on the upper here is helped out a lot by the mesh parts being more flexible than they look.
Underfoot feel is nothing special here. The shoe came out in the mid 80s and the construction on a shoe like this doesn’t innovate from that.
I can wear a shoe like this all day since the upper fits comfortably and the cushioning doesn’t try to do too much. Of course, for long walks or all day wear I’m taking a retro runner over these, but if I had to do these all day I could. It’s just thin leather up top and a thin midsole below, no frills and therefore nothing added in that could make these less comfy.
Conclusion
These quirky colorways are definitely worth a look if you want something different and eye catching on a dunk, which was exactly my thinking when getting these. On dunks I’m making decisions based purely on colorway and sometimes on theme or materials. Luckily the resale on these isn’t too bad, although it is irritating to have to get the shoes in this manner. If only they were more attainable this would not be an issue. However, based on the relatively low resale I think we are finally getting to a place where the shoes will be easier to get.
On modern dunks I’m more looking to just expand the collection with fresh pairs that look good. The materials here do the job and the camo panels really do look good. The leather looks and feels decent but not super noteworthy, and the star is obviously the camo patterns.
I have a lot of other pairs I wear just for actual comfort. These are not uncomfortable, but there’s better options out there for wearing for long periods of time. These provide nothing special on that front, which you should be familiar with if you’ve worn a modern dunk before. Just a basic shoe that keeps your foot off the ground. Regardless, the best thing about these is they look great on feet!
