The Nike Air Max Plus Voltage Purple brings some serious late ’90s energy with its bold color blocking. Most people consider these to be an OG colorway, although the backstory might be a bit more complicated. Regardless, in 2024 they came back again and I grabbed a pair!
According to some posts I saw online, this wasn’t one of the actual 1998 releases — it was a concept colorway that never saw store shelves until 2018 when it dropped alongside retros the Hyper Blue and Sunset pairs. Since this info came from the internet, I’d say take it with a grain of salt.
I was already eyeing these, but once Champs hit that super sale and tossed in a discount code, it was game over. Love that purple gradient and how the orange hits against that color. I waited for my Sunsets to show up first to make sure I liked how they looked in-hand, then doubled back for the Voltage Purples. No regrets. Now, with Hyper Blue still out there, completing the OG Air Max Plus trio feels inevitable.
The Voltage Purple pair sticks with the old-school vibes, arriving in the OG-style box with red and cardboard-colored top and a black bottom. They come laced up with skinny black oval laces.
Materials
Same story as the Sunsets — Nike kept it classic with synthetic leather/nubuck on the mudguard, TPU cage waves, and a mesh underlay. It’s not a shoe you grab for premium materials, but for what it is, the build quality feels right. Durable, breathable, and true to the Air Max Plus legacy.
Fit & Comfort
These fit snug at true to size, which is pretty typical for Air Max Plus releases. They mold to your foot well, but if you like a little extra room, consider going half a size up. Comfort-wise, the Air units provide that signature bounce and lightness underfoot. Nothing groundbreaking, but definitely comfortable enough for everyday wear.
