The Nike Air Max 1 ’86 Cosmic Clay sticks to a simple formula, embracing the classic Big Bubble silhouette without any elaborate backstory. Unlike the BRS Powerwall pair, these aren’t tied to Nike’s heritage. Instead, they’re all about that striking orange hue—hence the “Cosmic Clay” name.
I’m a sucker for orange on shoes, so when these hit a steep discount at Reynolds and Sons (almost half off!), I couldn’t resist. Sometimes simplicity wins, and the clean Summit White and Cosmic Clay combo makes these an easy pick for any Air Max fan.
These come in the same black box with red scuffs all over it like the Powerwalls. One downside? No bonus lace options here. You’re getting just the standard white laces, which still work well with the colorway’s clean aesthetic.
Materials
Materials-wise, it’s a familiar story. You’ve got your felt overlays and mesh underlays, just like most Air Max 1s. No patent leather Swoosh here like the Powerwall version—this one keeps it classic. Given the $150 retail price, it’s lacking a bit as far as premium construction. But given how Nike tends to do Air Max 1s, it’s pretty much what you’d expect. Nothing over the top, but it gets the job done.
Fit & Comfort
Fit is true to size for me, and if you’re familiar with the Air Max 1 or the Big Bubble variants, you’ll know what to expect. While some folks report sizing inconsistencies with the ’86 models, I had no issues sticking to my usual size. Comfort-wise, the larger rear Air unit and hidden forefoot Air unit offer decent cushioning. Nothing revolutionary, but solid enough for a casual day out.
If these are sold out online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
