With some models, I like to grab one “token” pair. Usually this happens with a brand I like but I’m not a huge fan of a model per se. These Asics Gel-Diablo Birch will likely be my only pair of Diablos.
These get their name from the offwhite part of the colorway (while the rest is pink). Apparently, the Gel-Diablo first dropped in 1995, and while some closer retros of the OG pairs released around the same time as these, these are actually a new colorway.
The Gel-Diablo’s odd look is kind of quirky in an interesting way. The chunky midsole definitely correlates with the dad shoe look that is coming into style currently. I think when laced a bit loosely, these take on the best shape. Otherwise, the way the lines are on the sides will make your foot look like it’s getting squashed in the middle. Also, the toebox is fairly on point but does curve up a bit. I did some reshaping on these and they look ok. It took a bit of muscle too, since the midsole is so thick. All that said, I’m glad I picked these up to have at least one pair of Gel-Diablos in the collection, and I recommend these for anyone that wants that trendy, chunky look without going too extreme with it.
What To Sport These With?
I was tempted to go with light wash denim and a white top, but then I tried the black jeans out! These actually look really nice with a dark, grey + black outfit. I’m digging the contrast, and I think the offwhite tone on the shoe helps pull off either look.
How Are The Materials?
The materials on these are fairly decent. The suede is not super plush or top of the line, but it is smooth to the touch and seems a cut above typical GR suede. I think materials fiends will not be wowed by these, but won’t be disappointed either. Overall I’m satisfied with the quality and craftsmanship put into this pair.
How Do They Fit?
These Asics Gel-Diablo Birch are very comfortable. As always, I like the snug runner fit so I went true to size. The flexible suede and breathable mesh tongue ensure that these don’t pinch too tight. If you are feeling nervous about Asics sizing, go with your true size and you should have a fairly standard, comfy fit.
