Seeing as the newest retro of this OG colorway just dropped, and I’ve already done the 2009 pair on this blog, I figured why not also showcase the 2011 and 2016 Air Jordan 3 True Blue retros?
The 2011 has some minor differences from the ’09 release. The material is definitely a different quality (more on that below) and the shape seems overall boxier. The cement print has a different thickness and the “JORDAN” lettering at the bottom is red and white instead of all red. Aside from these differences, it’s the same shoe.
The 2016 pair is updated with red on the back of the tongue and Nike Air on the backtab instead of the Jumpman.
I already covered how to do a direct match on these in the review of the 2k9 retro, but you can also pull off a reverse outfit with these to make them pop a bit. For this, I’d go with a predominantly dark outfit including a dark blue and red longsleeve t-shirt from Supreme, a white layer tee underneath for contrast and some black denim.
How Are The Materials?
It goes without saying that the materials on these aren’t as good as previous releases. In any case the leather grain is really inconsistent on the 2011 pair. It has that nice full grain wrinkle on it on some parts and is completely shiny and smooth on others. The materials aren’t terrible but I’m definitely not looking at these as being dope based off the leather or suede/nubuck used. The 2016 are similar but even less of a quality build. At least the leather grain is more consistent on the later release.
How Do They Fit?
The Air Jordan 3 True Blue fits true to size and is about as comfortable as any Jordan III. As I’ve said in the past, the 3 for me is the first truly comfortable Jordan that still looks good. If Air Jordan 1s (one of the better looking models) aren’t your thing or are too skinny, these might be a better look as far as what Jordans to add to the collection. This retro ain’t bad and if you missed out on the newest version, you might be able to find these for around the same price. As an aside, it’s funny how the retail price on the latest retros equals the resale price on older pairs.
