Nike SB Dunk Low Escargot Review

By Anthony Levine, longtime sneaker collector.

The Nike SB Dunk Low Escargot is a premium release from 2024 with some interesting quirks. Lately, I’ve been really into these underrated SB Dunk releases.

This pair draws inspiration from the famous French dish featuring snails! The overlays mimic the texture of snail shells, while the underlays capture the look of the garlic butter herb sauce that usually accompanies it.

Additionally, we get silver Swooshes and filigree on the back tab, reminiscent of fancy dinnerware. Finally, there’s a dinner plate graphic on the insole to round out the concept.

I like these because they remind me of the old Kermit Dunk Lows I had back in the day. Those featured grey overlays with green underlays, but I get a similar vibe here with the green canvas on the toe box and side panels. If the Kermits ever got a re-release, I’d still be tempted to grab a pair, as these have their own unique feel beyond the slight resemblance I mentioned earlier.

This pair comes from the Purple Box series and includes one set of reddish-brown SB laces with metal aglets.

Materials

These feature a mix of materials to enhance the theme. The underlays are a canvas-like textile, giving them a slightly rough texture. The overlays are made of textured leather, which is actually fairly soft to the touch while still being firm in construction. The ankle liner has a softer feel than normal… I can’t tell what it is exactly but it has a felt-like texture.

In terms of quality, the materials are solid for an SB release. The leather isn’t the most premium, but it has a nice texture and feels durable. That canvas material is definitely going to be a crease magnet, but otherwise, the material choices feel thoughtfully executed with regard to the theme.

Fit & Comfort

Like most SB Dunks, this pair fits snugly at true to size due to its construction. The sturdy materials make the fit slightly more structured than some softer leather or suede variations. I typically go up half a size in SB Dunks for a bit more room, and these are no exception.

The durable uppers offer a supportive feel compared to, for example, a suede pair, giving the shoe a solid shape—though it might take longer to break in.

As for the Zoom Air cushioning, it’s not the most noticeable for me during casual wear, but it provides decent support for walking and standing. While not the softest underfoot, the shoes hold up well, making them a reliable choice for everyday wear.

If these are sold out in skate shops or online, you can try looking for them on eBay.
