I’m not normally a fan of hybrid models. I wasn’t even going to get these Nike Air Max 90/1 University Red, but to be honest, they started growing on me!
The colorway is based off of the OG Air Max 1 colorway and the hybrid sticks this upper on top of an Air Max 90 midsole and outsole.
Light colored denim, including khaki, black denim, joggers, track pants – they all work with these. Feel free to sprinkle in some red accents and pair these with a white, black or grey top for an easy outfit. Hoodies and jeans are a good basic fit to wear with these, provided the pants have a decent taper to them.
Sometimes shoes just grow on you, and that’s not a bad thing! In hand, these feel like they will be the beaters for when I want to wear my QS AM1, but the terrain calls for an all-leather shoe instead. I also like how the AM90 midsole gives you a tad more elevation and adds to the trendy “chunky” look.
How Are The Materials?
This shoe is going to have it’s detractors, seeing as it eschews the suede/mesh layout of the OG AM1 and goes with an all-leather upper instead. In my opinion though, this leather is actually not bad at all! Nike has definitely come a long way from the plastic leather releases of the past. While these aren’t exactly premium, they did exceed expectations when I got them in hand for the most part.
How Do They Fit?
The Nike Air Max 90/1 University Red fit true size and are very comfortable. The comfort is basically on the same level as either of the shoes that these are based on. The toebox is a bit of a brick initially, so I gave these a good reshape before putting them on feet.
